Greg’s View on Mediocrity

by Greg Arthur on May.25, 2010, under Greg's View on the World

We all do it. We convince ourselves that what we have is fine and so there is no reason to pursue anything else, even though we dream of something else. We keep those dreams locked away in the confines of our imagination and sell ourselves the comforting thought of mediocrity. Mediocrity keeps us safe and allows us the pleasure of not having to strive for anything nor to stand out in the crowd.

How many of you have filled a romantic void with someone who is “sweet and lovable but definitely not for the long term”? Do you relate to going to movies with friends who you didn’t really want to see because the other option was to stay at home alone? Perhaps you play a sport you don’t really enjoy because the team needs you? These sorts of less-than-amazing experiences take up time and space in our lives, leaving very little for what we really want. If we clear out what does not make us happy – and I mean HAPPY – then we can focus on what we want and not what we don’t want. Sounds simple but it is not easy because your ego, which wants to keep you safe and comfortable, is going to resist this as much as it knows how.

If there is a term that really saddens me when people talk about their lives or a situation, it is when they tell me they are content…or things are okay. Contentment sucks. It means that you are aware of better things but don’t want to go for them. Why do that? Is it a fear of losing what you have…when what you have is not really what you want? Is it a fear of change when change is what will bring your dream into reality? Whenever there is fear of things changing or being lost always remember that the most precious thing that you have cannot be taken from you and that is you!

So go out and have a happy sandwich. Go lunch on a chunk of courage. Take your I’m-awesome-and-nothing-can-take-that-away pill and head out to do what you really want to do, what will make you happy and what will take you out of mediocrity into a life of fun and adventure. I know you want to.
